Chart Navigation & Plotting · Fixes & LOPs
For the most reliable two-bearing fix, the angle of intersection between the two lines of position should be close to:
- A20 degrees
- B45 degrees
- C90 degrees✓ Correct
- D170 degrees
Explanation
LOPs that cross near 90° give the smallest error figure and the most reliable fix. Bearings that are nearly parallel (a small or near-180° cut) make the fix highly sensitive to small bearing errors.
Authority: Bowditch, Pub. No. 9 (fix quality)
