Synthetic lines lose strength from internal abrasion (powder between strands), glazing or fusing from heat, external chafe, cuts, and inconsistent diameter. Such damage warrants retirement. Minor fading alone is not a condemning defect, but UV degradation can be, so the whole condition is assessed.
