Towing & Ship-Assist · Stability — Towing Hook / Quick Release
A towing hook or winch brake on a conventional tug is fitted with a quick-release so the crew can:
- ASlip the tow instantly if the tug is girted/tripped and begins to capsize✓ Correct
- BSpeed up the main engine
- CLower the anchor
- DAdjust the radar range
Explanation
If an athwartships towline load starts to capsize the tug (girting), seconds matter. A remotely operable quick-release on the hook or winch lets the crew shed the towline load instantly from a protected position, allowing the tug to right itself. The release must be tested and kept clear for use.
