Girting occurs when an athwartships pull on a high towline capsizes the tug. A gob rope (or tow-pin/Norman-pin arrangement) holds the towline down and aft near the centerline, reducing the heeling lever and keeping the pull more in line with the hull, lowering the capsize risk.
