Towing & Ship-Assist · Emergencies — Girting
The greatest danger of girting (tripping) is that the towing vessel may:
- ALose radio contact
- BDrag her anchor
- CRun out of fuel
- DBe girt over and capsize when the towline comes abeam and the tow's pull heels the tug✓ Correct
Explanation
If the towline leads athwartships (e.g., the tug gets crosswise to a tow with way on), the transverse force can heel and capsize the tug. Prevention includes gob ropes/tow pins, a quick-release towing hook/winch, and skilled handling.
