Segregated ballast tanks (SBT) on a tanker are arranged so that ballast water:

Explanation
SBT have their own piping and pumps, never touching cargo oil, so ballast can be discharged clean without oil contamination. MARPOL requires SBT on tankers above set sizes, reducing operational oil pollution from ballast.
