A vessel that receives a distress call which is not acknowledged by a coast station, and is able to assist, should:
- AWait several hours before acting
- BIgnore it and continue
- CSwitch off the radio
- DAcknowledge receipt and, if necessary, transmit a MAYDAY RELAY to alert others and the authorities✓ Correct
Explanation
Under the obligation to assist, a vessel hearing a distress that is not being answered must acknowledge and, where the distressed vessel cannot transmit or the message has not been acknowledged, relay it (MAYDAY RELAY) to bring in rescue authorities and other ships. The master may only deviate from assisting for valid reasons, which must be logged.
