A radar SART responds to an X-band radar with a line of 12 blips on the radar display. An AIS-SART instead broadcasts AIS position reports (derived from its own GPS) that appear as a distinct target on nearby AIS receivers and ECDIS, giving searchers the survival craft's actual position.
