Fire dampers in ventilation ducts are fitted so that, in a fire, the crew can:

Explanation
Ventilation ducts can carry fire and smoke between compartments and feed oxygen to a fire. Fire dampers (and remote means to stop fans and close openings) let the crew seal the ventilation to a space being boundary-cooled or flooded with a fixed agent, helping contain and starve the fire.
