Safety, Fire & Survival · GMDSS — SART Operation

How does a search-and-rescue radar transponder (SART) assist rescuers?

Explanation

A SART is detected by X-band (9 GHz) radar and replies with a signal that paints a line of 12 dots radiating outward from the SART's position on the searching ship's or aircraft's radar screen, homing rescuers onto the survival craft. It is a locating, not an alerting, device.

Authority: IMO GMDSS; SOLAS IV; SART performance standards
