Safety, Fire & Survival · GMDSS — EPIRB Registration

Why is it critical that a 406 MHz EPIRB be correctly registered and its battery and hydrostatic release kept in date?

Explanation

A registered 406 MHz beacon gives the rescue coordination center the vessel identity and emergency contacts encoded with the distress position, accelerating response and helping resolve false alerts. An out-of-date battery or HRU can prevent the beacon activating or floating free in a sinking.
