Safety, Fire & Survival · Survival — Survival Craft Boarding
When abandoning ship, it is strongly preferred that survivors board the survival craft:
- ABy jumping into the water and swimming to it
- BDirectly and dry, before launching, if the design and situation permit✓ Correct
- COnly after the craft is fully waterborne and crewed
- DFrom the bow only
Explanation
Boarding dry directly into the lifeboat/liferaft at the embarkation deck before/at launching avoids the dangers of cold water and improves survival. Jumping into the sea is a last resort; if necessary, it is done feet-first holding the lifejacket.
