The radar performance monitor (echo box / transponder check) lets the operator confirm that:

Explanation

A performance monitor produces a known test pattern (e.g., a plume or 'sun' of a certain length, or a transponder return) whose appearance verifies the transmitter output and receiver sensitivity are normal. A shrinking pattern warns of deteriorating performance before targets are lost. It checks the set, not tuning of a specific picture.
