When plotting a position from latitude and longitude, latitude is measured along the:

Explanation
Latitude is read and stepped off on the side (vertical) borders, longitude on the top and bottom (horizontal) borders. Distance is taken from the latitude scale abreast of the work, never the longitude scale, because of Mercator expansion.
