Navigation General · Publications & Corrections
The Light List differs from the chart in that the Light List:
- AShows the geographic positions of lights to a higher precision and includes additional details such as nominal range, structure description, and fog signal characteristics✓ Correct
- BIs updated only every five years, while charts are corrected weekly
- CCovers only lights with ranges greater than 10 nautical miles
- DIs published by NGA while charts are published by NOAA
Explanation
The Light List (published by USCG for U.S. waters) provides comprehensive data for all aids to navigation including lights, fog signals, daybeacons, and radiobeacons — with more detail than can be shown on a chart, including exact geographic coordinates, nominal and luminous range, structure description, and operating periods. It is updated via Notices to Mariners, not on a five-year cycle. NOAA publishes nautical charts; USCG publishes Light Lists.
Authority: Bowditch (Pub. 9), Ch. 3
