Two fixed structures in line define a range. When a vessel is on the range centerline, the front and rear range marks appear:

Explanation

When on the range bearing, the forward (lower) mark and the rear (higher) mark appear vertically in line — one directly above the other. Deviation from the line causes them to appear offset.
