Navigation General · Lateral Buoyage
You are bound outbound from a harbor. A red nun buoy is ahead. You should pass it:
- ATo port (leave it on your left)✓ Correct
- BTo starboard (leave it on your right)
- CEither side — red nuns have no lateral significance outbound
- DAs close as possible on the right to stay in the channel
Explanation
When departing (outbound/proceeding seaward), you are leaving the channel. The rules invert: red aids that were to starboard inbound are now to port outbound. Leave red to port going out.
Authority: 33 CFR 62 (U.S. ATON System)
