A Special Marine Warning covers brief but dangerous events — severe thunderstorms, waterspouts, or sudden gusty winds (commonly 34 kt or more) and frequent lightning — expected within about two hours and not already addressed by a current marine forecast/warning. It is broadcast urgently on VHF.
