Meteorology · Weather Routing — OTSR
The goal of optimum track ship routing (weather routing) is to:
- AStay as close to land as possible
- BAlways follow the great-circle track regardless of weather
- CSelect a route that minimizes transit time, fuel, and heavy-weather damage by avoiding adverse winds and seas✓ Correct
- DMaximize exposure to following seas for speed
Explanation
Weather routing uses forecast wind, wave, and current fields to recommend a track that balances minimum time/fuel against safety, avoiding the worst seas. It may depart substantially from the great circle to dodge a storm or adverse swell.
