Deck General · Shiphandling — Backing & Filling
'Backing and filling' is a technique to turn a single-screw vessel short-round in a narrow space by:
- AAnchoring repeatedly
- BAlternating ahead (rudder hard over) and astern movements to walk the bow around✓ Correct
- CUsing only the bow thruster
- DIncreasing to full ahead
Explanation
By going ahead with the rudder hard over to swing the bow, then astern (using propeller walk) to check headway without losing the swing, the handler turns the vessel within little more than her own length—useful in a tight basin.
