Deck General · Watchkeeping — Calling the Master
A watch officer should call the master when:
- ARestricted visibility, risk of collision, equipment failure, or any doubt about safety arises✓ Correct
- BOnly at the end of the watch
- CNever—the master must not be disturbed
- DOnly in port
Explanation
Standing orders require the OOW to notify the master in defined situations: restricted visibility, traffic causing concern, difficulty maintaining course, failure to sight land/soundings as expected, equipment failure, heavy weather, or any doubt. Calling the master does not relieve the OOW of responsibility until the master takes the conn.
