Deck General · Shiphandling — Spring Lines
An after bow spring line (leading aft from the bow) is used when getting underway to:
- ASpring the stern away from the dock while working ahead against the line✓ Correct
- BPull the bow into the dock
- CRaise the anchor
- DSet the gangway
Explanation
Working the engine ahead against an after bow spring (with rudder appropriately set) holds the bow in and walks the stern off the pier, allowing the vessel to back clear. Spring lines convert engine thrust into a controlled pivot.
