Deck General · Knots & Bends
A carrick bend is preferred over a sheet bend for joining two very heavy hawsers because it:
- ACan be tied in the bight without access to either end
- BDistributes the load more evenly and is easier to untie after heavy loading✓ Correct
- CHolds better on wet synthetic line than any other bend
- DRequires no backup knot even in storm conditions
Explanation
The carrick bend is the preferred bend for large diameter hawsers because the symmetrical interlocking loop distributes strain evenly across the knot, and it remains relatively easy to untie even after being heavily loaded. A sheet bend in a large hawser can be extremely difficult to release after sustaining high tension. It must be backed with a seizing or stopper when used on hawsers.
