Chart Navigation & Plotting · Running Fix
When advancing an earlier line of position to obtain a running fix, the LOP is moved parallel to itself in the direction of the course made good by a distance equal to the:
- ADistance run between the two observations✓ Correct
- BRange of the object
- CHeight of tide
- DVessel's beam
Explanation
The earlier LOP is translated parallel to itself along the course made good by the DR distance run between the two observations, then crossed with the later LOP. Because the advance relies on the DR run, a running fix is only as good as the course and speed made good used to advance it.
