Celestial Navigation · Compass Error
Once compass error has been found by azimuth, the deviation for that heading is obtained by:
- AAlgebraically removing the known variation from the compass error✓ Correct
- BAdding the compass error to the gyro error
- CMultiplying the compass error by the latitude
- DReading it directly from the Nautical Almanac
Explanation
Compass error is the combined effect of variation and deviation. With variation known from the chart, deviation = compass error − variation (applying the proper east/west signs). This checks the magnetic compass on the current heading.
